The Variant 18A compact subwoofer system is the ideal complement for the Variant 25A, extending the bandwidth of the array to 30 Hz. The cabinet design incorporates rigging hardware that permits a column of Variant 25A’s to be flown from or stacked above the Variant 18A.

The Variant 18A utilizes a single 18 in. cone transducer. The 18H loudspeaker incorporates a 4 in. (100 mm) edge-wound flat wire (EFW) voice coil and carefully engineered cooling scheme that efficiently evacuates voice coil heat providing a high power handling capability and low power compressiong.

A class D amplifier rated at 2500 W peak powers the Variant 18A. The amplifier is self-cooled and equipped with a complex limiter / compressor that controls the power output and in turn, loudspeaker excursion. The limiter/compressor protects the loudspeaker components without compromising sound quality providing virtually transparent limiting even when driven to maximum output levels. The Variant 18A amplifier offers soft start-up, is protected against under voltages and has an AC fuse that is replaceable from outside the amp. This compact, amplified sub-woofer system incorporates a single 18 inch low frequency cone transducer and a flat voice coil with a diameter of 100 mm (four inches.) The low frequency loudspeakers have an injection molded aluminum chassis.

A typical production unit has the following specifications:

The on-axis frequency range is from 33 Hz to 156 Hz (-10dB) and the system comprises a class D amplifier. The nominal power handling of the low frequency amplifier is 1250 W (RMS) and its signal processing allows it to behave like a sub-woofer unit. It comprises a filtered output from 138 Hz for VARIANT 25A units and balanced output and input sockets using XLR connectors. The disconnectable mains inlet is a Powercon NAC 3 cable. It includes the following LED indicators: a limit indicator (a light indicates that the amplifiers are overloaded,) a signal indicator (a light indicates that there is an input signal from the amplifiers,) and an ON indicator (a light indicates that each channel of the amplifier is switched on.)

The system is mounted inside a rectangular easy-to-stack cabinet, using 15 mm Birch plywood. Each unit is finished in black or white weather resistant textured paint. The front is protected by an aluminum grille, coated with a corrosion-resistant polyamide film and covered with acoustically transparent speaker cloth. Two handles are also provided. The system incorporates integrated steel and aluminum flying fixtures, designed to ensure safe, easy and rapid flying of each unit by means of high resistance release pins. There is also a computer application available for designing arrays.

The system shall be a D.A.S. VARIANT 18A system.
